Occupational Therapy

We provide Occupational Therapy for children and adults.  Occupational therapy is a client-centered health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. The primary goal of occupational therapy is to enable people to participate more easily in daily life activities.  Occupational therapists achieve this outcome by working with people and communities to enhance their ability to engage in the occupations they want to, need to, or are expected to do, or by modifying the occupation or the environment to better support their occupational engagement.(WFOT 2012)

In addition to medically-based services, Journeys Occupational Therapy, LLC, also provides Wellness Services on a private-pay basis.

Interventions may include the following treatment techniques:

SENSORY INTEGRATION is the ability to make use of sensory information from the environment and from within our bodies in order to act in flexible, adaptive ways to changing environmental demands.  We provide an in-depth assessment and intervention for movement-related sensory processing challenges (clumsiness, difficulties with motor planning, poor balance, fine motor incoordination) as well as modulation difficulties (efficiently responding to and utilizing tactile, auditory, visual, or movement information).

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY (CST) is a light-touch therapy that releases tension deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole-body health and performance. Learn more

REFLEX INTEGRATION involves observing primary motor patterns that may be impeding an individual's ability to maximize their skills. Our work is informed by studies of Brain Gym®, Rhythmic Movement Training™, Musgatova Method®, readings of Sally Goddard and Mary Fiorentino's published works, Bal-A-Vis-X™, and more to assist individuals' abilities to move more confidently and freely through space with less effort.

MODULATED MUSIC is often used during sessions and home programs to address coordination, auditory processing, core function, and attention.   Based on individual needs and circumstances, either Vital Link's Therapeutic Listening®  or Integrated Listening Systems™ (iLS) is recommended. Clients have also reported significant changes after using the Safe & Sound Protocol from iLS.

RHYTHM AND TIMING OF MOVEMENTS including breath control are essential for optimal performance and improved attention. We use a variety of approaches, including adding a simple metronome or chant to a movement activity, utilizing Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention™, and/or Bal-A-Vis-X™ during sessions or home programs.

FINE MOTOR AND HANDWRITING SKILL DEVELOPMENT is often the outcome of building foundational skills in core strength, postural control, and visual-motor control.  We individualize and combine approaches from a variety of handwriting methods (First Strokes®, Handwriting Without Tears®, Size Matters, Loops and Other Groups, Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting) to best meet client needs.  Our therapists have studied the impact of visual skills on fine motor development, and are able to screen clients to make an appropriate referral to a developmental optometrist.
